We are a non-profit organization based in Mozambique with a focus on sustaining our natural resources through reusing and recycling.
ALMA was established in 2007.
At the time, we started seeing an increasing problem of waste on Tofo Beach. Increasing numbers of tourists were leaving more waste and the noticeable impact of having no Solid Waste Management (SWM) system in our province, was displayed through the amounts of rubbish on the beach, in the market, as well as the local market. Waste production is part of the tourism industry that this magnificent place attracts and accommodates. It became ALMA’s goal to support our local communities to improve the local cleaning and recycling system and create a sustainable tourism-community relationship in a clean and healthy environment. In 2010, ALMA collaborated with the local Municipality to establish a local waste tax for tourist operators. Still in effect, this became the foundation of our sustainable Solid Waste Management System. Since then we have developed further, creating educational materials, community awareness activities, and livelihood opportunities for community members within the tourism industry.

We love Tofo and therefore want to take care of it.
We incentivize everyone to take responsibility for the environment, each other and ourselves.
The Municipality of Inhambane (CMCI) has partnered with ALMA since the beginning in 2008. ALMA holds an active contract in order to operate the Tofo / Tofinho rubbish collection, beach cleaning and administration of Tofo rubbish dump for over 9 year. Since 2018 CMCI has come to a regularity in monthly payments and therefore ALMA has managed to run the rubbish collection and the beach cleaning with continuity and dedication.
The German cooperation has supported ALMA with several infrastructure and technical projects.
The German embassy in Mozambique has supported projects with finances to establish a sustainable Solid Waste Management System in Tofo.
